Report:
The unofficial Community Shield in Aberdeeen between the league and cup winners ended all square after a competitive match played in a good spirit without referees.
The Rubies were missing 15 regular squad members allied to 2 no shows who are now as popular as anal warts. Down to a starting 9 plus a Highlander it was always going to be a tough one in searing heat.
The Rubies started the better of the two sides and played some neat short passing football and importantly showed good ball retention on the grassy but bobbly pitch.
It was no surprise when after some good football Paul Edmiston opened the scoring after 10 minutes. The Rubies were controlling the opportunities and were surprised to be pegged back 5 minutes later as a long shot deflected off Crebes and looped over the stranded Marcus between the posts.
In the second period of three, the initial good passing and retention fell away as the one man advantage of Highlander began to tell as they started to string their passing together and started to get to the bye line. It was no surprise when their diminutive forward was able to head in unchallenged from 8 yards as the Rubies were guilty of ballwatching.
After regrouping, a little reorganisation and plenty of fluids the Rubies started the final 3rd in a much more positive fashion and really started to dictate the tempo. The calling, movement and passing all stepped up a gear and was rewarded with a very neat goal. Neat link up play between Scotty and Nursie (rolling the back the years) fed the ball through to Stephen Zirger on the left who nutmegged his opponent and chipped a great ball to Paul Edmiston at the far post who headed into an empty goal for the equaliser.
It was now all Ruby time and Paul E was unlucky not to get a third as a shot from distance was well tipped over by the keeper. As the clock ran down the Rubies finished with a succession of corners but couldn\'t quite force the winner before the end.
A great performance by 9 + 1/2 against 11 in hot conditions, a moral victory for the Rubies. A big thanks to our 3 ringers - Matt Williams, Stephen Zirger and Paul Edmiston who all had great games. No less thanks to those Rubies who did make it Crebes, Ox, Justin, Scotty, Chill and Josh plus Shorty providing support on the sidelines.
