In the 2nd pre season friendly, the Rubies strolled to a comfortable victory in warm conditions at Sandy Bay. Surprisingly for a club awash with centre backs the initial line up had strange look with Ed in goal, Dan Turner at right back and a central pairing of Josh and Dave Maunde.
The key in the hot conditions was ball retention and the Rubies started well with good passing and movement. An opening goal for the Rubies was no surprise. Good worked by Dave K released Gel down the right who crossed to the far post for Sssshhh to stoop to head in from at least 2 feet. Five minutes later he added his second as his pace got him away from the MPR defence to slot coolly right footed into the bottom corner. The best goal of the opening third came on 19 minutes as Ben Arber hit a right foot volley into the top corner to stun their keeper and our bench. The 1/3 ended as both sides were tiring in the heat. A few words on retention and movement from the skipper and manager and the Rubies went out with renewed vigour. Paul Edmiston took over in goal, Dan pushed up front and the new slimline Scotty slotted in at right back. Further goals from Gel, Dan and Mawds finished the contest and the Rubies were able to dominate but without the same passing and control as the first 1/3. After a longer second break and plenty of fluids, the Rubies started the final third with much better passing and were able to string 10 or more passes together to keep the opposition chasing shadows. An own goal (nice finish), Dan and Paul Edmiston running half the pitch , with his opponent trying to take Pauls shirt off, before slotting home at the second attempt completed the scoring.
A pleasing scoreline but even better was the increased composure on the ball through the side plus even more fitness in the legs.
Another fixture has been lined up next Saturday same time at Sandy Bay - opponents to be confirmed. Training Wednesday at South Island School 8pm on the roof.
