Report:
The Rubies went into this hastily arranaged friendly with arch rivals British Consulate with only 13 players (including 2 ringers) in warm conditions at Ho Man Tin. The Rubies welcomed back Jigsaw after a long term layoff, Mark C back after a foot injury and Fitzy between the sticks. The game kicked off and in the first 5 minutes the Rubies looked like they couldnt tackle, head or pass the ball as the recent mooncake (or last nights lager?) excesses played their part and the Consulate looked sharper and on their game. As the first third wore on though the Rubies began to get their controlled passing game under way and began to carve some openings down then right where Nursie and Tim were starting to get some room. After 13 minutes Nursie floated a ball from the right to the far side of the Consulate box where Jigsaw rose to head (Crouch -like) back accross goal to Shorty who flicked a header over the advancing keeper. 1-0 to the Rubies and well deserved. The well contested third came to a close and the Rubies took on some liquids, a few words from the gaffer on not lying too deep. Jigsaw and Shorty took a rest and Paul and Mike started up front. The second third started much better for the Rubies and they enjoyed better spells of possession and were comfortable playing the ball accross the back 5 to retain possession. Dave K had a snapshot, Mike had a flick header and it seemed that a second goal was coming. It duly arrived after good possesion and movement allowed the tireless Jonny Gel to feed Dave K in the inside right channel whose chipped cross to the far post allowed Paul \"Silver Fox\" Edmiston to head in unopposed from 2 yards. The back 4 were snuffing out any consulate threat and the team were working hard to win possession and compete all over the park. The final 3rd beagn with Ed in goal and Fingers at left half and Shorty on for Mike who pulled his hamstring. Gel had a good run, Kimchee turned up at centre forward from left back for a shot on the run however the highlight was a glorious through ball from Josh in to the path of Jigsaw who hit it first time on the run but sadly straight at their keeper. The shortened third finished with the Rubies on top and the Consulate well beaten. Other than a poor first 5, a dominating performance by the Rubies with each player contributing well. Hard to pick any stand outs but Babyface was very solid at the back and the middle 2 of Dave K and Gel were non stop. Jigsaw came through with no ill effects so a very pleasing day out. We will find out first league match on Monday night so please watch the website. Cheers Rock.
