Report:
The Rubies started their league defence with an eventful visit to Ho Man Tin. Sadly the first half was a poor one for the Rubies who were unable to get any rhythm to their game as mistakes were made and passes went astray. First Ball were quicker to the ball, winning the 50 -50s and looking more likely to score. Norman Stanley back between the posts had to make a couple of smart saves in a first half where the Rubies were second best. After 14 minutes, their centre forward latched onto a chipped through ball bisecting our centre backs and promptly volleyed into the net giving Norman Stanley no chance.
This woke the Rubies up and they started to get more into the game. Dave K was unlucky as a 30 yard shot hit the crossbar and went over. Shortly after the Rubies were awarded a free kick for handball on the edge of the box despite the player being a metre inside when he handled. With no room to get it over the wall, Fitzy rolled it sideways to Dave K whose goalbound shot was blocked. Babyface limped off with a pulled hamstring, Fitzy went to sweeper, Shorty came on for Jigsaw, Ben came on for Bingo, the Griffmeister slotting into right midfield. Half time brought encouragement from the skipper and the manager about control and competing.
Knowing that we needed a matchwinner, the manager brought on the Pieman at right back (in front of his watching parents on that wing). Sadly there was to be no goal or wildlife births but it stirred the Rubies into action. The passing and control was better but most importantly the Rubies were competing and pressing First Ball for possession. The deserved equalizer came from the outstanding Jonny Gel who latched onto a bouncing ball in their box and was able to clip into the corner of the net with the outside of his shiny white right boot. The Rubies could now smell blood and five minutes later a low Gel shot from inside the box took a huge deflection past their stranded keeper. The bench erupted and the skipper tried to mount the manager.
This joy was shortlived as Jigsaw went down clutching his recently repaired left knee and sadly had to be carried from the pitch. The Rubies were down to 10 men as both second half substitutions had been made as they chased the game.
The last five or so minutes saw intense pressure from First Ball and they should have scored from a free header following a corner.
With a minute remaining their left winger got to the bye line and put in a great low cross across the 6 yard box which was steered into the far corner by their incoming striker. Heartbreaking for the Rubies in view of their second half performance but on reflection probably a fair result to the neutral.
Man of the Match and Honey of the Week was Jonny Gel.
There is a game for the next 3 Saturdays so please watch the website for details.
