Report:
The Rubies went into this match with a relatively unchanged side looking for revenge for the home and away defeats last season. The pitch conditions at Kowloon Tsai plus low sun and swirling wind werent ideal for the Rubies free flowing style. However they started the game well, pressing the oppostion back into their half and getting the ball forward quickly to James and Mawds. The first chance was a Gel header wide at the back post from a corner and then the skipper side footed wide when well placed. Ed then pulled another left foot shot accross goal and wide of the far post. The domination was rewarded after 12 minutes as Mawds drove a cross from the left wing and their defender kindly lifted his boot to steer it into the net. The game then became more even as Highlander started to get their game going and tested Porridge with a longe range effort. The Rubies were getting penned back slightly and were defending too deep which meant any miskick or slice was putting them under unneccessary pressure. Nevertheless the Rubies were continuing to press and forced 2 or 3 corners. The second goal came on 27 minutes as James shot from the corner of the box beating the keeper at his near post with a firm low shot. The Rubies werent finished as Gel steered home lef footed on 35 minutes. Despite no delay for injuries the game continued on past 40 minutes and Gel was unlucky as he drove past 2 defenders and shot over the bar at the Forrest Penalty end. The half finished and the Rubies jogged off happy with their efforts and there was talk of 5 or 6 at half time.
The subs who came on in the first half Chill, Ben and Diccon started the second half as the Rubies looked to continue where they left off. Unfortunately the Rubies went to sleep and allowed Highlander to start winning possession, uncontested headers and poor man marking allowed them to fluster the Rubies. The inevitable happened as Josh headed into his own net after 15 minutes despite the keepers call. The Rubies shortly got another fright as their umarked striker hooked it goalwards forcing Porridge into a flying one hand save. Dave K showed his frustration by telling the referee that you are just about to book me and then proceeded to ingrain his predators into the legs of his opponent. He was booked. The Ex Pieman was showing some neat touches up front and was unlucky when the ball spun away when well placed. The Rubies finally lifted and started to play some good football down both wings and began dominating again. Mawds, Dan and Babyface came back on for the final 15 -20 minutes to give some fresh legs and this paid dividends as Mawds got away down the right and crossed firmly to Ed who volleyed home unmarked at the far post. The game was over and the Rubies played out the final minutes in some ease. A good result on a difficult pitch where the only real difficulty was self created. Mentions to Porridge who played despite being unwell and kept the Rubies in it at 3-1, Gel had a strong game in the middle however the sponsors Honey of the Week was James Burdis who was a continual threat up front.
Game next saturday - please get on the site and chilli up. Rock
