Report:
The Rubies went into this 2nd v 3rd clash after a month long break and some with an extra kilo of mince pie to ferry around Sandy Bay. If a wake up call was needed it came on 4 minutes when a free kick conceded 30 yards out was chipped over the wall to hit the cross bar and go over. The Rubies hit back three minutes with the best move of the half. Good work by Josh and Ben down the right allowed Mawds to cross to the incoming Gel who set himself to smash it past the keeper but managed to chip it off his shin at 2kmh past the stranded keeper who had dived 30 seconds previously. Never mind 1-0 to the Rubies. A spell of Ruby pressure followed as Fingers shot wide and Chill had a looping header from a corner tipped over. Nevertheless the Rubies were putting in a poor performance as misplaced passes, missed tackles and general lethargy were keeping First Ball in the game. Another missed tackle led to FB shooting wide and the Rubies knew that 1-0 was not enough. The half finished with the skipper attempting to drill a shot through the legs of his opponent after a good cross park move.
The skipper and manager had strong words at half time and second half introduced Justin, Babyface and Paul Edmiston into the game. The Rubies best chance of the half came on 7 minutes when Mawds turned on the edge of the box and shot left footed past the far upright when perhaps Paul E was better placed. Five minutes later FB were level when yet another high clearance was allowed to bounce in our half, was missed by our defence and their striker was able to hook it into the far corner of the goal with the aid of the post and crossbar. Instead of galvanising the Rubies to press for the winner, it was FB who looked more likely following a number of corners and hitting the outside of the post. Jeff and JB came on late on but despite a couple of Ruby corners, the winner could not be found. All in all, a number of sub par performances throughout the team and significant improvement is needed for next week.
The sponsors Honey of the Week was Jonny Gel for a committed performance and his goal.
