Report:
The Rubies went into this clash knowing that a much improved performance was needed after last week. The Rubies welcomed January window new signings Stephen Zirger and Matt Williams into the squad and gave a Stephen a start on the left in place of the injured skipper. Starting with a more aggressive 3-5-2 formation with instructions to press high up the pitch, the Rubies got off to a flying start after 3 minutes when James was slipped through by Fitzy and planted the ball into the far bottom corner. Two minutes later an almost identical move saw Gel feed James who duly dispatched in the same corner. The Pieman was doing well up front holding the ball up and linking with the advanced midfielders, Justin was getting some good crosses in from the right and one cross after 6 minutes for James was headed over for what would have been the fastest Ruby hat trick (?) All seemed to be too easy and the Rubies suddenly lost their momentum and flow as the Tigers started to win some possession. Chill was booked after stopping a quick free kick despite having been fouled himself and the Rubies were finding the final pass eluding them. Stand in skipper Fingers clever free kick just eluded Pauly C at the far post as the ball just wouldnt run. At the other end, Norman Stanley made a smart save round the post as an unmarked player shot on target at the far post. The half closed with James coming off injured and in a scrappy manner as neither side could get a clear chance. The second half saw some slight improvement as Jeff shot at their keeper, Mawds shot left footed past the post and Fingers shot over the bar. The Tigers chances were mainly coming from Ruby misplaced passes as they pulled one past the post. Abbo had time for some handbags at the corner flag and the first known sighting of a Kimchee stepover were little reward for the bench. Suddenly the new front 2 of Mawds and James were starting to get more room and passing started to flow. It was no surprise when that man Gel popped up inside the box to sweep home the 3rd goal with 8 minutes to go. It was now all Rubies, corners were forced and the game was being played in the Tigers half. Despite the late pressure, the Rubies couldnt force another goal and th game ended on a high.
A good start and finish to the game but a middle spell where we lost our way despite being under no great pressure. Some good performances notably from Matt Williams at right back, Fingers in the holding midfield role however the sponsors Honey of the Week was Ben Arber who had a very good game initially at right back, in midfield and up front including a double shoulder juggle to go past his opponent (amazing himself and the bench).
Please watch the website for next weeks game, training Monday 8pm on roof of South Island School unless advised otherwise. Cheers Rock - Go the Rubies
