Report:
The Rubies went into this game with a smaller squad than usual and welcomed back Mark Christal for his second start of the season and the skipper after injury. The Rubies started brightly on the large grass pitch in Sai Kung with Mawds shooting wide after a good cross from Matt W. James B then found himself in acres in their box but could only shoot straight at their keeper, the ball spilled wide and Mawds follow up shot was cleared off the line. The match was taking the pattern of the match earlier in the season as the Rubies were rueing the missed chances as the game became scrappy in midfield. After 15 minutes their striker was through 1 on 1 with the advancing Norman Stanley and their lad lifted it over NS but a foot wide of the post to massive Ruby relief. Three minutes later the Rubies were in front with the best move of the half, the Ponce played in Mawds down the left wing where he outpaced the defender and hit a low cross across the face of goal which James tapped in unchallenged. Mawds then tweaked his hamstring and Shorty Christal replaced him upfront. Immediately, a Ponce cross was brought down by Shorty and fired over left footed from outside the box. The last real action of the half saw a narrow escape as a high through ball was missed by our defence and their striker could only hit the outside of the post with his tame shot. The skipper and managers half time talk was about maintaining width and ensuring that we had enough depth of cover at the back. The game started tightly as 1948 continued to battle in a physical game. Shorty picked up a booking after 10 minutes as he challenged for a 1 on 1 through ball but managed to get a bit of their keeper on the way. The decisive 2nd goal came when Babyface won a header from their clearance, Shorty flicked on to the inrushing James who calmly sidefoot volleyed over the keeper from 25 yards. The new boots were clearly working. Shorty was proving a handful for their back four as another flick fell for Jeff who volleyed over. Steve Zirger, on at left back, then played a neat one two, drifted past their right back and chipped their keeper only to see it drift wide by a foot. 1948 did not lie down and were starting to win a couple of free kicks in our half. One followed a booking for Babyface who mistimed a challenge and literally kicked their guy up in the air. The resultant long shots did not trouble Norman Stanley but one was headed clear by Nursie on this 6 yard box. The Rubies were continuing to spring their offside trap by getting our midfield through but the sealing goal was elusive. The Ponce headed over a Kimchee corner and then 1948 forced a couple of corners which were dealt with comfortably. After 27 minutes, Ponce received the ball on the half way line and dinked a ball through for Shorty to chase into a menage a trois of defender, keeper and Ruby. After a mighty clatter, Shorty emerged fully dressed from the other side to roll the ball into the net for a well earned goal. The Rubies played out the final minutes comfortably and ran down the clock in professional style for a hard earned but evetually comfortable win. A number of good performances notably from Josh in central defence, James up front but the sponsors Honey of the Week is Babyface Creber who had a much improved and solid game in defence. A game next week is unlikely at this stage - please watch the site as if we do play it would be GoodRich! Training Monday night 8pm South Island School - see you there. Go the Rubies - cheers Rock

Mawds: how does it feel to be 3rd top goalscorer! How many goals would Burdiss have to his name if he had bought those boots at the start of the season? Go the Rubies!
