Report:
The Rubies retained the league title after a hard fought scrappy win over Highlander on a bumpy pitch at HMT. Knowing that a win would be enough to win the title led to a general nervousness in the early play that pervaded throughout the match. The Rubies started brightly though witth Kimchee shooting wide and Nursie\'s galloping run from right back but were not able to trouble former Ruby Chubby Chiu in the Highlander goal. The skipper then floated in a free kick which Dave K miskicked when well placed. The Rubies were not being troubled too often at the back where Chill and Stormin were organising however one ball over the top led to their striker shooting wide when he should have hit the target. This wake up call led the manager to throw on Diccon High Impact Martin up front and this bore immediate results as he flicked on a through ball to Mawds who duly found the net for the opening goal. Dave K then found himself through on goal, he rounded the keeper but the ball ran away from him on the dry bumpy surface and the chance disappeared. The last action of the half was a booking for Stormin who took the decision very well (not). Jeff and Steve Zirger (in his farewell match) came on at half time and the Rubies pressed down the slope. The first scare of the half though came from a Highlander corner which curled in and hit the Ruby crossbar before bouncing to safety. The Rubies were still having trouble getting the ball down to play their usual style and the match remained scrappy which suited the opposition. Dave Ks run and cross was nearly met by Mawds and Paul E had a long shot which was gathered by their new keeper. At 1 - 0 the bench was still nervous and the Rubies werent creating too much. Chill came off and the resultant reshuffle brought Jeff and Diccon into back four. Stormin steered a header wide from Steve\'s corner as the minutes ticked away until the second goal finally came. Mawds got away down the right and almost reached the byline. A pull back to his 3 better placed unmarked incoming team mates? Not likely as he pulled the trigger, the keeper somehow deflected the ball onto the inside of the far post, it bounced out allowing Gel to finish from 10cm. The relief was enormous and the ref blew up soon after the restart to allow the celebrations to begin. A less than vintage performance but the right result. Good perfomrnaces by Dave K, Stormin (and a comedy moment) and others but the sponsors Honey of the Week was Bingo who made some crucial interceptions at 1-0.
The next match is First Ball in the Cup on 10 April, get on the site and keep up your fitness over the 7s weekend. Go the Rubies! Cheers Rock
