Report:
The Rubies played their first fixture against Soho Casuals on a glorious day on the carpet. Including 4 triallists the Rubies started with a slightly unusual line up due to the absence of many regulars. The Casuals played some neat passing football and went ahead after 2 minutes when the ball looped over Big Mac McKeever between the sticks. It took the Rubies ten minutes to create their first chance when Jon Bond shot wide and shortly after Gel put one over the bar. Big Mac had to get down low to smartly save at the other end as the game opened up. Paul E then had a good run but his shot was over the bar. On 30 minutes the Casuals got a free kick 25 yards out which their no.10 put into the top corner after a 2 step run up. Even the Rubies applauded that one. Just on the stroke of half time, Paul E got past 2 defenders and stroked home to get the Rubies back in it before the break. The second half was much better for The Rubies with more possession and cohesion and the chances started to flow. The skipper shot wide, Joos had a good left foot shot and Gel headed against the bar and over from 3 yards when unchallenged. Gel then turned and shot wide, Matt W then put in a good cross which Jon Bond volleyed over. The Rubies then had a clear penalty which was waived away. It was clearly one of those days and shortly before the end a Casuals shot was parried into the net by Big Mac. On balance a game we should have won but a good run out for potential new Rubies and a side we will definitely play again. Some good performances from Jurgen, Ginger Kevin and Matt Williams.
